1. Your Role & Our Ethos
1.1 Your role as a freelance guide
You work with The Zurich Insider as an independent freelance guide, not as an employee. That means:
-
You are free to accept or decline each assignment.
-
You are free to work for other agencies, travel companies, and private clients.
-
You choose how you prepare, plan routes, and tell stories, as long as you deliver a safe, timely tour that honours the agreed terms with the client.
The Agency cares deeply about the quality of the guest experience and about safety. Within that frame, your methods, style, and personality are yours. The Freelance Guide Agreement outlines the legal aspects of this relationship (independent status, fees, cancellations, data protection); this handbook simply provides practical guidance.
You are also a cultural ambassador. Guests often remember:
-
How you made them feel welcome and at ease.
-
The way you helped them see Zurich/your city and Switzerland through “insider” eyes.
-
The stories you chose and the care you showed for their needs and interests.
1.2 Our ethos
The Zurich Insider is a small, curated team of guides who represent Swiss cities and Switzerland with integrity, warmth, and insider expertise. Our shared ethos can be summarised in a few key ideas.
Genuine warmth & empathy
We take a real interest in our guests as people. We listen as much as we talk, and we adapt to their pace, energy, and background. Tours are conversations, not monologues.
Insider expertise
We know our cities beyond the postcard views: the side streets, the layered histories, the everyday life behind the façades. We share generously and honestly, and we’re comfortable saying “I’m not sure, but I can look it up” when needed.
Hospitality & respect
Guests are our visitors; we are their hosts. We respect different cultures, beliefs, identities, and perspectives. We aim to make people feel welcomed and safe, without crossing professional boundaries.
Neutrality with nuance
Switzerland is known for neutrality, but also for complexity and dialogue. When guests ask about politics, religion, migration, or other sensitive topics, we aim for facts, multiple perspectives, and nuance, not ideology. We’re comfortable saying “it’s complicated” and exploring that complexity together.
Safety first
Guest safety and your own safety are non‑negotiable. You are encouraged to set boundaries, change a plan, or even end a tour early if you believe safety is at risk, and to contact the Agency for support. Chapter 6 offers practical guidance for emergencies and difficult situations.
Professional integrity
We show up on time, prepared, and present. We communicate clearly, keep promises, respect confidentiality, and handle money and information carefully. We take pride in representing ourselves, The Zurich Insider, and Switzerland well—without losing our individual voice and style.
Your hierarchy of priority order is: Safety → Legal/ethical compliance → Guest dignity → Guest satisfaction → Everything else.
