8. Wellbeing & Growth

Guiding can be deeply rewarding—and also demanding. You hold stories, manage emotions, walk many kilometres, and adapt constantly. This chapter offers ideas for looking after yourself and continuing to grow as a professional guide.

8.1 Wellbeing & sustainable work

Noticing your own signals

Common signs that you might be stretching too far:

  • Feeling unusually drained or irritable after tours.

  • Dreading assignments you would normally enjoy.

  • Difficulty “switching off” after work or sleeping poorly.

  • Becoming less patient with guests or colleagues.

It’s normal to have tiring days, but if these patterns persist, it may help to adjust how you work.

Practical habits

Small habits can make a big difference over a season:

  • Plan realistic gaps between tours for rest, food, and transitions.

  • Hydrate and snack regularly, especially on hot or long days.

  • Protect your voice (warm‑ups, hydration, resting your voice between tours).

  • If you guide many days in a row, plan at least occasional “zero‑tour” days.

Boundaries that support wellbeing

  • It’s okay to say no to assignments that push you beyond safe limits (e.g., too many back-to-back long days).

  • You can set times when you do not check work messages, so you have genuine downtime.

  • You can share with The Zurich Insider if you feel your schedule is becoming unsustainable; we’d rather adjust than burn out a valued guide.

8.2 Learning & professional development (CDP - Continuous Professional Development)

Guiding is a craft you can grow throughout your life. Curiosity is your best asset.

Self‑directed learning

  • Walk the city on your own and notice what catches your eye.

  • Visit museums and exhibitions; read about Swiss history, politics, culture, and contemporary life.

  • Try new routes or test different story versions on friends or colleagues.

  • Read widely about Swiss culture, history, politics, and current events

  • Acquire new knowledge, craft your storytelling, improve your language skills, and enhance your cultural competency and sensitivity.

Learning with others

  • Share tips and anecdotes with fellow guides when possible.

  • Join occasional internal workshops or knowledge sessions if offered.

  • Ask for feedback (from guests, The Zurich Insider, or peers) on specific aspects you want to improve (e.g., pacing, storytelling clarity, handling sensitive topics).

Planning your growth

You might choose one or two focus areas per season, for example:

  • “This year I’ll deepen my knowledge of Zurich’s Jewish history.”

  • “I want to become more confident in handling politically sensitive questions.”

  • “I want to develop strong routes for guests with limited mobility.”

8.3 Feedback Loops

  • The Agency may provide feedback from guest surveys or internal observations

  • We celebrate what's working: "Guests loved your warmth and knowledge of local restaurants!"

  • We offer constructive suggestions: "A few guests mentioned pacing felt rushed; consider lingering at favorites."

  • This is collaboration toward excellence, not criticism

  • Your voice matters: Share your opinion freely. We learn from guides who know the city deeply. Great teams co-create excellence.

8.4 Mini wellbeing & growth checklist

During the season

  • I plan breaks and free days, not only tours.

  • I pay attention to how I feel physically and emotionally after tours.

  • I say no when my schedule or capacity is genuinely full.

  • I take moments to reconnect with why I enjoy guiding.

For growth

  • I have 1–2 specific focus areas I’m developing this year.

  • I occasionally seek feedback rather than wait for it to arrive.

  • I use at least one resource from the Guide Learning Hub or similar to keep learning.

  • I share and welcome feedback.
